Easy care and maintenance

Cleaning laminate flooring is a piece of cake.  Dust and pet hairs are not attracted to the flooring because of its antistatic qualities.  Therefore, a regular sweep and an occasional wiping down with a damp cloth should just about do the trick to keep your flooring looking brand new.

Humidity

Internal Timber Doors

When it comes to internal timber doors, there are several choices on the market.  One may opt for; the solid door which, as the name suggests, is made out of solid wood, laminated doors constructed of lightweight laminate material, or, the obvious go-between, veneered doors, which are laminated doors coated with a solid wood finish.

At Servgroup, our laminate and veneered doors are produced by PAIL, a renowned Italian company specializing in woodworks, PVC, and Aluminium windows.  They have, as they put it, re-invented the door.  With more than 50 years of experience working in timber, we find that their products, which we then import to Malta, are of an excellent price and standard, which is, at the end of the day, what we want to deliver to you, the end customers.

Timber doors can be constructed to a number of different finishes.  The traditional Maltese aperture is constructed out of solid wood and includes detailed wood craftsmanship which our resident carpenters are more than happy to deliver.  However, the modern flush door sits in line with the wall and gives the idea of a more ‘streamlined’ environment. 

What’s more, internal doors nowadays come in a wide variety of colours.  All the traditional wood stains still exist, such as Pine, Oak, Walnut, Cherry etc.  However, what about the new, more modern shades, which we find are increasing in popularity daily?  These can include, to name a few, White Ash, City Oak, and Khaki Linen.

Thermal Break Windows

In today’s economy, conserving energy has become a top priority in almost all households and organisations. With the rising cost of energy bills, as well as the simple fact that most people are aware of the harm fossil fuel causes to the environment, people are always looking for ways to reduce their energy consumption.

Despite this, most consumers are unaware of the fact that they can save energy by simply utilising Aluminium Thermal Break Windows. These are apertures specifically designed to conserve energy by reducing the need of air-conditioning throughout the year.

Essentially these Aluminium Thermal Break Windows reduce the amount of heat or cold entering the habitable area by use of a separator material. This is a rigid, low thermal conductive polyamide or polyurethane. The aluminium frame would be split into two pieces and the separator material would then be bonded in between them. The idea behind this is to prevent temperature transfer through the frame itself.

The separator material provides the profile with several benefits; the material itself can be up to 1000 times less thermally conductive than aluminium and up to 100 times less than steel. It helps to prevent condensation on the inside of the frame itself which in turn helps to inhibit the growth of mould, especially within gypsum walls. The thermal break mechanism also has the added benefit of dampening vibrations. This results in the reduction of sound transmittance.

The frame itself is not the only factor in an Aluminium Thermal Break Window. One must also take note of the glass itself. The frame could be coupled with standard double glazing glass, however, it would be more beneficial to utilise Low-e Double Glazing Glass, Solar glass or, for optimum efficiency, a fusion of both Low-e and Solar Glass.

The Low-e glass would be metal coated on one side with the use of either Pyrolytic coating, which is a hard coat, or sputtered coating which is a soft coat. This is a microscopically thin layer and is near invisible to the naked eye. It acts as a filter to block long wave radiation, such as that of infrared heat, and allows short wave radiation, such as UV and Visible light to pass through. 

By coupling solar glass and Low-e the filtering power is increased significantly, blocking up to 50% more unwanted solar energy than standard clear glass, and up to 40% more than even dark tinted glass. This provides the benefit of protection without sacrificing lighting or window size.

This is beneficial as in the summer months the thermal radiation is reflected away from the room and the short wave radiation passes through, which is then absorbed by the furniture within the room. As a result, the sun would warm up the furniture in the room yet keep the room itself cool.

In the winter months, the warmth of the room would want to naturally escape out into the cold. However, the Low-e glass would reflect the thermal radiation back into the room, keeping it warm.

As a result, Aluminium Thermal Break Windows help to keep your habitable area well lit as well as maintaining the house or office at a comfortable temperature throughout the year with minimal need for air-conditioning.

Steel Railings

What to look for before buying a steel railing?

When it comes to purchasing railings there are a variety of factors one must take into consideration.

Servgroup provides a variety of options for creating railings. One of these options is the choice of what material to use. A consumer may choose to use:

·       Iron

·       Galvanized Iron

·       Stainless steel grade 304

·       Stainless steel grade 316

Each material provides its own benefits and downfalls. Iron, for example, is the cheapest option. However, due to the fact that it is not galvanized it would require regular repainting to prevent rust. On the other hand, Stainless steel is more expensive yet it is more aesthetically appealing and also more durable than galvanized iron.

The 304 grade is the most commonly used stainless steel with the 316 grade following. The difference between the two grades is that grade 316 steel has a superior resistance to chemical corrodents such as sea water. 

Stainless steel also has two different finish styles; Brushed or Polished. The brushed finish gives the metal a pattern of fine lines parallel to the brushing direction. It would retain some of its inherent metallic lustre yet it would no longer be reflective. Despite this, the surface would still be smooth to the touch. The polished finish creates a smooth, clear, mirror-like finish and is done by wearing down the metal with progressively finer grades of grit paper then polishing it to a high shine with the use of buffing compounds.

When deciding whether to use polished or brushed it is important to note that the brushed finish retains more dirt and would be harder to keep clean than the polished finish. It is therefore suggested that polished finish be used when designing railings for external purposes. When designing for internal purposes either finishes are suitable as the railing is not exposed to the elements.

All of these materials are durable and easy to fabricate, weld, finish and mould into any shape or design. In the case of the iron materials, they may also come in any colour. The railing could also be level or inclined for elevating areas such as ramps or stairs. The end result would also be simple to keep clean.

A consumer should also note that there are certain criteria one must meet when designing railings. Domestic railings must be at least 1 metre high whereas railings for commercial use must be a minimum of 1.1 metres high. If the building is over 8 stories tall the railings on the 8^th floor and above must be at least 1.2 metres high.

If the railing design creates a “ladder affect” then the railing design must be slightly altered to prevent the railing from being easily climbed over. This can be done by utilising various designs such as;

•          Pregnant Railings
•          Indenting the top rung inwards
•         An inwardly indented rung in between the two top rungs
